Left Handedness

Since both myself and my oldest daughter are lefties, I thought it would be appropriate to include some links about the subject. Southpaws, as we are sometimes called, have a bit of a hard time adapting in a right-handed world sometimes. The world has come a long way since we tied left-handed children's hands behind their backs to make them right-handers, but you will still find that most everything is made for a right-handed person.

Some of us have had to learn to do some things right-handed because there was no one to teach us how to do it left-handed. My own mother still will not allow me to peel potatoes in her house because I take away too much of the potato with the peel. I have never been able to use a left-hander's pair of scissors, yet I don't cut very nicely with a right-hander's pair either. I've learned to take my time with these tasks if I want them done right.

One of the best things that we came across for my daughter was the Handwriting without Tears curriculum for handwriting. Her handwriting is beautiful! She has just finished the first book of cursive and will begin the second soon. The curriculum works with both lefties and righties, so I've begun using it with my youngest daughter as well. Maybe I'll practice a little myself and my handwriting will be at least legible.

Learning Difficulties

As you may know, my oldest daughter has dyslexia. Because of that, I've done a lot of reading and a lot of research about how to teach her so that she will be able to learn in a way that will allow the information to be absorbed and to stay with her. I have found that she needs to use as many of her senses as possible to be able process information easily.

As always, do your research and use what works for your child. Not everything works for each child.
